Update on Storm Damage in Sioux Lookout

Sioux Lookout, ON – A violent storm system caused significant damage throughout the Municipality on Wednesday, June 23rd. This resulted in Mayor Doug Lawrance declaring a State of Emergency on Thursday morning.

In the days since, damage has been assessed, insurance companies have been contacted, and dedicated workers and volunteers have been busy finding accommodations for those displaced from the Sunset Suites.

Storm Causes Damage Across Municipality

Sioux Lookout, ON – A summer storm system swept through Sioux Lookout last night, with strong winds causing significant damage. Trees and power lines were downed. There was damage to homes, outbuildings, fences, vehicles, and property. This includes significant damage to the roof of one of our local hotels, as well as damages to Municipal facilities.

The following is a summary of the proceedings of the Regular Council Meeting held June 16th, 2021: 

  • Michael Scott made a presentation to Council for a Dog Park at the back half of the skating rink that has been blocked off from the main rink in Hudson. Mr. Scott has assembled a team of community volunteers who are looking to create a Dog Park and has asked for Council’s support on the project. Temporary Closure of Legion Section at Northway Cemetery

The Legion section of Northway Cemetery has been cordoned off temporarily, due to health and safety concerns. The annual raking of pine needles from the area has not taken place yet, due to the redeployment of staff to cover a shortage in grass cutters.

As soon as this piece of annual maintenance is complete, the Legion section of Northway Cemetery will be reopened.

The rest of the Northway Cemetery remains open to the public.

Moving to Step One of Roadmap to Reopening on Friday

Sioux Lookout, ON – The Province of Ontario has announced the safe and gradual lifting of public health measures, starting with a move to Step One of the Roadmap to Reopen at 12:01 a.m. this Friday, June 11, 2021.

This move brings many welcome changes, including:

  • outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people;
  • outdoor dining with up to 4 people per table;
  • outdoor fitness classes, personal training, and sports training for up to 10 people;
  • essential retail at 25% capacity, and able to sell all goods;

Extension of Orders and Expiration of Stay-at-Home Order

Sioux Lookout, ON – While the provincial declaration of emergency and Stay-at-Home Order expire on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, we will continue to operate in the Shutdown Zone of Stage 1.

This means that indoor gatherings are not allowed with anyone you do not live with, except one other person from outside the household who lives alone or is a caregiver. Roadmap To Reopening Ontario Update

Sioux Lookout, ON – While the Province of Ontario’s stay-at-home order, issued April 16th, continues until at least June 2nd, changes announced yesterday will impact residents of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout.
